Summer Tanager
Congratulations, Tracker!
If you've found the Summer Tanager, you've officially earned your Tracker classification in the American Flyway adventure. This vibrant songbird isn't one that everyone notices. It takes curiosity, patience, and a willingness to explore the outdoors—qualities that define a true tracker.
The Summer Tanager is one of North America's most beautiful birds. Adult males are a brilliant, solid crimson red from head to tail, while females wear warm shades of golden yellow and olive. During spring and summer, they can be found throughout Georgia's woodlands, especially near forest edges, river corridors, and tall hardwood trees.
Known as the "Bee Bird," the Summer Tanager has an unusual favorite meal. It catches bees and wasps in midair, skillfully removing the stinger before eating them. Its cheerful, robin-like song often gives away its location long before you catch a glimpse of its brilliant red plumage.
At American Flyway, every bird represents another step in your birding journey. Every sighting sharpens your skills, builds your knowledge, and reminds us just how incredible the natural world really is.
You've tracked down the Summer Tanager—well done.
Now it's time to lace up your hiking boots, grab your binoculars, and continue the adventure. There are hundreds of incredible birds waiting to be discovered across the American Flyway.
Good luck finding your next one, Tracker—and welcome to the adventure.
